The Napa Musicians Performance Guild What We Believe...
We are a Professional Association of Musicians. Who are joined together in a common cause to revitalize and regenerate our industry, our culture and musical performance in our community. For many of us Music and Performance is part of our lives, it has become a way of life for us. Many of us earn our income from Music and Performance. We have come to realize that our music industry in Napa is challenged by Political, Economical and Technological forces causing a decline in our industry.

We desire to carry on a tradition of performance for musicians and the development of technique and skill for the musicians stage. Also to educate and mentor our younger generation of musicians. If you are a musician and you are seeking a professional career and music is a passion for you, should you desire to expand your knowledge and skill, or you love the experience of music with friends and associates, then the Napa Musicians Performance Guild should be of an interest for you.

Business Corner:

National research conducted over a period of two years between 2003 and 2005 concluded interesting results. The micro survey concluded an average for rate of pay per hour for musicians. You must remember that today's market for performance will have different levels of pay demographically. For example, in Napa we have a substandard industry. Not enough places to perform, so the supply of musicians is greater than the demand. So the hourly rate takes a low dollar drop. The statistics revealed that 35.00 per hour per musician was the low rate. Were as 45 to 55.00 per hour per musician was the median rate with 65.00 dollars and above per hour per musician being the high rate. This may give you a idea on how much to bid on music contracts for performance of your musical act. Most importantly remember that in music markets you have to determine the market and what the market will yield. There are different music markets and they all yield different rates. That is why you see so many different rates for performance all over the place. Sometimes it is really tough in our industry today and many of us end up performing for that low dollar drop.

However operational gigs may lead to better shows. Operational gigs are shows that aid in keeping the "stage legs" under your musical act and polish your act. Also the exposure of your act to other sources in the market. But remember, consider all the elements of the operational gig before you commit to the show. For example, is there good press? Will you get a feature in the press? Can you use the show to get potential clients for other shows. Does your music act have a excellent opportunity to be discovered? Are you opening for a known act, are you on the bill and all the hardcopy marketing material? Can you turn the show into a special event that centers your musical act into the market and you evolve into a returning featured musical act? These are just a few idea's, consider all the elements. We will have more discussions......

Oh My eight notes! Guild Tee Shirts are here! Sorry! Sold Out!

NEWS:

Our young members of Aveus, formerly Knights Of Havok are experiencing what many of us have experienced for thirty plus years. Title 8 of the City Municipal Code, Noise Regulation. So our heavy metal prodigies have a very good chance of getting signed, however if they cannot rehearse and polish their act, they may loose ther'ye chance. Title 8 is really an issue that all musicians will face in Napa city. This Director is out to advocate a clearer definition for musicians. Has anyone in our local government found out that the Federal Government declared the music business as a home enterprise? More on this issue to come. Register Article.

DaltonJerry appeared before the Napa City Council on Tuesday May 15th, 2007 to advocate for Local musicians as well as the community. The Administrator/Directors appearance stems from an earlier issue which involves Craig Smith of the Napa Downtown Association. Please take a minute to read the address to the City Council. Address PDF.

It was confirmed that the NDA Director Craig Smith must allow attendance by the public for the Chef's Meetings. The Guild Directors plan to attend. To date Craig Smith has not notified us of the management meetings.

Speaking of the Chef's Market, Craig Smith contacted the Guild Directors to advise us that someone who represented themselves as Guild members made comments to a musician who was performing on May 25th and who was from out of town. The Guild advised Mr. Smith that only the Directors of the Guild are the official communication for our organization. And most importantly we do not support any type of "closed shop" methods. In fact we endorse the Chef's Market and the hiring of musicians local, regional and national. That supports our desire to build a better music industry. Plus all musicians are our Brothers and Sisters. It is important to remember that the Guild is not a union, we are a professional association of musicians. We asked Mr. Smith earlier in May to focus on local musicians as well for the Chef's and he complied to our requests.

Are you a resident Musician? Where are you playing and how much are you making per show. Are you performing downtown? Let the Guild Directors know about your experiences. Email.

**The Executive Director of the guild has made it clear to the NDA and Mr Smith that the guild is advocating for a raise in pay for the musicians at the Chef's Market. We can only ask, so asking is doing!

**We are in the process of working with the Chamber Of Commerce in Calistoga to participate in their plans for music events in 2008.

**Pete Rodriquez joins Robert sherman and DaltonJerry in Directorship of the Guild.

We have a date of November 10th for the COPIA Performance. This years ensemble will be working on a new theme. Great show! MOTOWN!

Should you have noticed the Register Article "City Cuts" and the "The Music In The Park" series being cut as part of a 91,000.00 dollar cut. Greg Coleman of the Napa Community Resource Department cut the program.

However the Guild had reached Sponsorship and the series would have been paid through our sponsorship. We did not financially need the support of the NCRD to continue........Yahtzee!
